Repurposed CTA Train Car Reaches Final Stop in Logan Square

Many Chicagoans were treated to an unusual sight on last Thursday morning; a CTA train car en route to Logan Square, but not on the usual tracks. The retired L car was loaded onto a truck and driven into the city from Downers Grove.

The train car came to its final stop on top of a new apartment property’s amenity deck.  The transit-oriented development in Logan Square, L, offers unique amenities and conveniences not otherwise found in the neighborhood. Residents will be able to hang out in the L car-turned-lounge on their expansive amenity deck, which also features BBQ grills, usable green space, lounge chairs, a fire pit, and water feature.

Many members of the media were on-site Thursday morning to see the train car lifted up on a crane. Chicagoist‘s Braden Nesin took some beautiful photos of the process. The Chicago Tribune wrote a story about the lift and development. ABC and CBS also featured the event on their nightly newscasts.

In addition to the outdoor amenities, the residents of L will also have access to a full fitness center with brand-new equipment and a resident lounge. With keyless entry and a state-of-the-art front door intercom, the building is extremely technology-friendly. The recycled train car is in-line with L’s environmental commitments, as it is currently seeking a LEED Silver certification.
