Downtown Chicago is a popular place to film movies. The city can serve as the beautiful back-drop to a romantic comedy, act as a stand-in for a futuristic world, or even play an actual role in the film. When living in downtown Chicago apartments, you might recognize the settings of some iconic movie scenes right outside your door.

Here are a few of our favorites:

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

In one day, Ferris goes to the top of the Willis Tower, visits the Chicago Board of Trade and Art Institute, has lunch, takes part in a parade, attends a Cubs game, erases all the evidence and still makes it home on time. Chicago’s skyline has changed drastically since the movie debuted in the 80’s. In 2017, it’s expected to change even more with 33 new downtown Chicago apartments coming to the market.

My Best Friend’s Wedding

A pivotal scene with Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney takes place on a Chicago River Water Taxi. Some people say this is their favorite way to experience the beauty of the city. Many downtown Chicago apartments, such as OneEleven and Wolf Point West, feature views of the river and easy access to the Chicago Riverwalk.

Divergent Series

This trilogy is set in futuristic Chicago with the Loop and River North neighborhoods playing a major role. The Willis Tower, known as “The Hub” in the film, is where Tris goes for her choosing ceremony. The Merchandise Mart is also home to one of the factions. In present-day Chicago, you’ll find many brand new luxury apartments near the Merchandise Mart.

A League of Their Own

During WWII, while the men were off at war, the owners of the US baseball teams decided to create a female league. Dottie and Kit, two sisters, try out for the new league at “Harvey Field”, which was filmed at Chicago’s Wrigley Field in the Lakeview neighborhood. Apartments in Lakeview are popular with renters because of easy access to Wrigley Field and Lake Michigan.

The Break Up

Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn must put their Lincoln Park condo up for sale after their relationship goes south. The movie features scenes at Wrigley Field, Michigan Avenue, Riviera Theatre and Chicago’s Lakefront path!

Batman Begins & The Dark Knight

In these blockbuster hits, Bruce Wayne becomes Batman in an effort to save Gotham City. With villains like The Scarecrow and The Joker, the films have more than their fair share of action. These movies feature scenes in the old Chicago Post Office and the Chicago Theatre! The director, Christopher Nolan felt downtown Chicago would give Gotham City the personality viewers always imagined. If you loved the feel of the city in the movie, a downtown Chicago apartment is perfect for you.

Ocean’s 12

Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including George Clooney, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, and Brad Pitt filmed in Chicago for this long-awaited sequel. During filming, these A-list celebrities took full advantage of all Chicago has to offer by going to clubs, the finest restaurants and even a stop at Wrigley Field. Downtown Chicago neighborhoods feature tons of restaurants, shopping, nightlife and more Chicago renters can take advantage of steps from their apartment just like top Hollywood players.

Whether you are moving to Chicago, or have lived here for years, have fun getting to know the city through the big screen.
